10. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya
A Delhi boy falls for a Punjabi girl just a few days before her marriage. The movie tells the story of what happens next. It's a typical boy meets girl story but Varun Dhavan's charismatic presence brings freshness to this movie. Domestically, the film earned 73 crores and in overseas market it pocketed $2.34 million. At a press conference, producer Karan Johar spoke of the film to be an ode to the classic hindi film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
9. Ek Villain
When a girl becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, the husband decides to hunt down her killer and take revenge. A pathetic rip-off of I Saw The Devil (2010), the movie starred Siddharth Malhotra, Shradha Kapoor and Ritesh Deshmukh. The film joined the 100 crore club by earning around 98 crore in theatrical release and additional distributor share of 49 crore. Overseas, it earned $2.1 million in its first week. The movie’s original title was Villain but later it was changed to Ek Villain due to copyright issues.
8. 2 States
A boy meets a girl from different religious background and tension escalates between their families. Not many people know this but the movie was inspired by writer Chetan Bhagat’s real life. It is director Abhishek Varman’s first directorial, who has earlier worked as assistant director on films like My Name is Khan and Jodha Akbar. The film earned $5 million from international markets and 101 crore at the domestic box office. Shah Rukh and Ranbir were considered for the lead role at an early stage but the filmmakers decided to go with a relatively fresh face for the lead.
7. Jai Ho
It is the story about an ex-army man who urges people to rise against corruption. The basic idea, sans the violence and masala, has been lifted from Hollywood movie Pay It Forward. This movie directed by Sohail Khan was a bit of a disappointment but Sallu’s fans still didn’t mind. Struggling to reach the 100 crore mark, it finally netted 107 crores in India and $6 millions overseas. A.R. Murugadoss who had directed the original Telugu film Stalin, wrote the story and screenplay for this one.
6. Holiday
The movie tells the story of Captain Virat Bakshi of Defence Intelligence Agency who, with the help of his fellow army men, hunt and disband a sleeper cell posing threat to the national security of India. It netted 112.65 crores in India and $3.80 millions in overseas markets. It is a remake of the Tamil film Thupukki, but originally it was meant to be vice-versa; director A.R. Murugadoss wanted to make the Hindi version first. But at that time, the project got shelved due to unavailability of Akshay Kumar’s dates. Later when Akshay came onboard, he decided to act as well as produce the film along with long time friend Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Holiday was declared the biggest earner of the first half of 2014.
5. Singham Returns
Sequel to 2011’s superhit Singham, the sequel was expected to be an even bigger hit. Ajay Devgan reprised his role as Bajirao Singham and Kareena Kapoor added the glamour quotient to the film. At Indian box office the movie has earned an estimated 140 crores and the overseas collection are around $6.3 million dollors. The shoot stretched owing to Devgan’s commitment to another project, Action Jackson. He was juggling between the two projects. The movie cashed in on the goodwill of its previous part.
4. Bang Bang
Official remake of Hollywood movie Knight and Day, which starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The Indian remake was produced by Fox India and director Siddharth Anand was roped in to direct. In India, the movie earned 139.75 crores and overseas it did a business of $11.97 million. Originally director Siddhart Anand wanted to cast Shahid Kapoor in the movie but finally the role went to Hrithik who charged a whooping 30 crores for the film.
3. Happy New Year
A group of con artists get together for their biggest heist ever. Directed by Farah Khan, the movie was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Initially scheduled to be made right after Main Hoon Na, the project got delayed as Farah got busy with other projects. Back then, Zayed Khan was supposed to play the role of Abhishek Bachchan. The film earned 176 crores in India and $15 millions from overseas market. By the way, did you spot Shah Rukh’s youngest son AbRam in the end scene?
2. Kick
Story about a guy with a heart of gold who turns into a criminal in order to do some good. Kick earned 216 crores at Indian box office and 24.6 crores overseas. It was the directorial debut of producer Sajid Nadiadwala; otherwise the movie was supposed to be directed by Anees Bazmee. Did you know that Telugu actor Ravi Teja was initially supposed to play the lead; he was the hero of the original Telugu version too.

A movie about an alien who questions our ways and beliefs. PK is easily one of the best movies of last year. It was released on 19 Dec ‘14 on 6000 screens worldwide out of which 844 screens were in overseas market. Till date, the movie has earned a whooping 314 crore in India and 150 crore abroad. Did you know Aamir ate over 1000 paans as his character needed to chew paan in almost every scene.
